La
chapelle basse : C’est au IXe siècle, posée sur le rocher dominant le
village, que fut construite cette petite chapelle. Elle comptait parmi
toutes ces modestes églises de pierre qui fleurirent lors de l’essor du
Christianisme en Languedoc. Des générations de villageois furent
baptisées dans les eaux claires du Riou Nègre coulant tout à côté. Le
village situé en contrebas ne s’appelait pas encore Belcastel
puisqu’aucun puissant château ne le couronnait encore. Sans Fernand
Pouillon, l’histoire et l’existence de cette ancienne chapelle auraient
sans doute disparu à jamais. Après des semaines de fouilles, il
découvrit en effet la chapelle et la citerne que des siècles avaient
comblées.
Lower Chapel: In the 9th century, this small chapel
was built upon a rock above the village below. It was one of the many
stone chapels built as Christianity spread throughout the region of
Languedoc. Generations of villagers were baptized in the clear waters
of the Riou Nègre flowing nearby. The village below the Chapel was not
called Belcastel at the time, since the castle had not yet been built.
The history of this ancient chapel would have been lost entirely, had it
not been for Fernand Pouillon. Through weeks of digging, Pouillon and
his team discovered the Chapel and Cistern, which had both been
completely filled in with earth.
