ALGUNOS RASGOS DE LA MUJER PAGANA IRLANDESA – SOME TRAITS OF IRISH HEATHEN WOMEN Entre las otras muchas curiosidades que nos ofrece el Libro de Leinster (“Lebor Laigen”), hay una parte que está dedicada a la descripción de la sociedad previa a su momento, es decir, a una sociedad eminentemente pagana, que nos da muchas pistas sobre la situación de la mujer en esta época. Mucho antes de la era cristiana, la idea de la familia ya estaba establecida firmemente entre los primitivos gaélicos. Las compensaciones por desgracias sufridas o la pérdida de miembros del clan estaban claramente definidas. En igual detalle, también están destacados los privilegios dentro de las clases sociales; uno de ellos nos describe la prerrogativa a casarse con una mujer libre y de los mismos derechos y rango que su hombre, lo que destierra de nuestras ideas la imagen de una mujer totalmente sometida al hombre (en otras sociedades se buscaba el matrimonio con una mujer de menor rango para poder imponerse a ella al completo). El texto nos dice también que la mujer tenía el derecho de ser consultada por el marido en todos los asuntos, y también tenía el derecho (como el marido y los hijos) al “folach”, una serie de bienes que podían ser ganado y mantequilla. Incluso las esposas de los mercenarios y sus hijos gozaban de plenos derechos en el clan, aunque dependiendo de los casos sólo podían poseer la mitad o un cuarto del “folach”. El tema del adulterio es tan famoso en la literatura irlandesa por la jerarquía del clan, estructurada por los beneficios acumulados, pudieran tratarse de ganado y mantequilla, de honores, esposas de rango superior, etc. La rigidez en tales castas hasta llega a verse reflejada en la poesía del Rey Cormac Mac Airt (Siglo III) fuertemente influenciada por la misma. Las esposas dentro de su posición social se casaban con guerreros de parecido rango; no parece que puedan casarse con hombres de categoría inferior. Según las “Brehon Laws” (Leyes de los Jueces), la mujer tenía una serie de obligaciones, pero también disfrutaba de unos derechos inherentes, siendo algunos de ellos inexistentes en la sociedad cristiana. Por ejemplo, uno de los más sorprendentes era la amnistía legal que recibía durante tres días (con respecto a su marido) después de conocerse el adulterio del mismo, pudiendo llegar incluso a matarlo. * * * Among many other curiosities offered by the Book of Leinster (“Lebor Laigen”), there is a part aimed in the description of a previous society, namely: a society eminently pagan, which gives us a lot of clues about the women’s situation in this period. Long before the Christian Age, the family idea was strongly established between the primitive Gaels. Compensations for suffered fatalities or the loss of some clan members were clearly defined. At the same detailed level, there were highlighted privileges into each social group; one of them displays us the prerogative of marrying a free woman of the same rights and ranks of her betrothed, thus this banishes the image of a totally submitted woman (in other societies they search for wives of less social status in order to dominate without any barrier). Similarly, the text tells us that women had the right of being consulted about all matters, as they had also the right (like her husband and children) to own the “folach”, a set of goods that could be cattle and butter. Even a mercenary’s spouse enjoyed full rights in the clan, although she could own half or a quarter of the “folach” in cases. The subject of adultery is so famous in early Irish literature because of the hierarchy of the clan, structured by wealth and honours. The stiffnes of such castes even reaches the poetry of King Cormac Mac Airt (3rd century), strongly influenced by it. Wives must marry with warriors of approximated social status; there doesn’t seem to be marriages with men of less cathegory. According the “Brehon Laws” (Judge Laws), women had a number of obligations, but they enjoyed inherent rights as well; inexistent rights in Christian society. For example, one of the most shocking of them was the three-days legal amnesty (in relation to her husband) from the knowing of his adultery; the wife could even kill him.
