Castel del Monte was built by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II between 1240 and 1250. In 1240 Frederic II sent a decree to Richard De Montefuscolo, the governer of Capitanata, ordering him to prepare the necessary materials to construct a castle next to the Saint Mary's Benediction Abbey of Monte Balneolo.
